From Romeo to Rambo: Popular Portrayals of Journalists in Bollywood Cinema

Ruhi Khan, Danish Khan

Abstract

Most commercial films are not a prism reflecting reality, but a figment of someones imagination and desire to see the world as he or she would like to. Hindi film is devoid of much reality and is often an exaggeration, yet it defines its audiences aspirations and perceptions. This article attempts to understand the depiction of journalists in cinema by analyzing the popular portrayals of journalists in Bollywood films over a 30-year period from 1981 to 2011. The analysis includes 33 films, ranging from "Mr. India" to "Rockstar," where the role of the journalist or media has been important in the films narrative script or has been entrenched in public memory for its journalistic aspects. Five popular representations of journalists are identified: romantic companion, glamour chaser, investigative superhero, power magnate, and brainless mouthpiece.
