A pre-conference workshop at the AEJMC 2015 Conference in San Francisco on Wednesday, August 5, 2015 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m: “Honoring the Career of Joe Saltzman: Journalist, Teacher, Mentor, and Pioneer"
This panel explored the career of Joe Saltzman, the director of the Image of the Journalist in Popular Culture and professor of journalism at the Annenberg School of Communication & Journalism at the University of Southern California. Fellow colleagues, friends and former students reflected on his influence as a scholar, teacher, and mentor. Saltzman shared his own thoughts on his rewarding profession and discussed the next steps in his storied career. (ESIG). The first hour featured Saltzman's professional career, emphasizing the six historic documentaries he produced for CBS television from 1968 to 1974. The second hour sumed up his 48 years at USC with USC Annenberg Dean Ernest Wilson and Director of the School of Journalism Willow Bay leading an array of colleagues and former students. The third hour was on the IJPC, emphasizing its newest project, The Heroes and Scoundrels Journalist in Popular Culture Project, and the fourth hour featured the Saltzmans' charity, The Jester & Pharley Phund with Barbara Saltzman and supporters speaking about the charity and its achievements.
